GB-Wordyl is bbbbbr's Game Boy word game. Guess the hidden five-letter English word in six tries; the tile colors tell you which letters fit. This ROM is hosted under GPL-3.0.

Walkthrough

GB-Wordyl is a redistributable open-source Game Boy word game. The ROM loads when you open the page. You get six tries to find a five-letter English word.

  1. Start

    Start

    Press Start on the title screen. Two help screens show the color key and the menu shortcuts; any key moves on.

  2. Type a guess

    Type a guess

    Move the cursor over the on-screen keyboard with the D-pad and press A for each letter. B deletes. Start submits all five letters.

  3. Read the colors

    Read the colors

    Gray: the letter is not in the word. Yellow: it is in the word in another spot. Green: right letter, right spot.

  4. Narrow it down

    Narrow it down

    The keyboard keeps the colors too. Here WRITE ruled out W, R, T and E and showed that I is in the word, just not in the middle. Use the clues until all five tiles turn green.

Which language is the word list?

English. The author also publishes German, Spanish, French and other dictionaries as separate ROMs.

Are there hints?

Select + Start fills in letters you have already matched. Hard mode in the menu makes every clue count in the next guess.

Can I play it on a phone?

Yes. The on-screen pad has the D-pad, A, B, Start and Select, so you can type, delete, submit and open the menu. Landscape is easier.
