About this test

This quiz, written for cv.cm, weighs the practical things that decide whether an animal will thrive with you: daily time, home size, hours away, travel, allergies, budget, noise, lifespan and the chores you can live with. It is a starting point, not a guarantee: individual animals and breeds vary a lot.

Before you bring any animal home: research the species' needs, count the full cost including vet care, check your lease and local rules, and think about who will care for it when you travel. Consider adopting from a shelter or rescue, and fostering first if you're unsure. A pet is a commitment for its whole life, which can mean decades.

FAQ

What is the easiest pet for a beginner?

There is no zero-effort pet. For busy people, a cat or a properly set-up aquarium usually fits best; for families with time and space, a dog. Small animals like hamsters and rabbits need more specialized care than people expect.

I'm allergic. Can I still have a pet?

Fish and reptiles don't shed fur or dander, so they are the safest choices. No cat or dog is truly hypoallergenic; if you want one, spend time with that animal before adopting and ask a doctor.

How much does a pet cost?

It depends on the species and where you live. Beyond food, plan for the setup (cage, tank, lamps), vaccinations, neutering, and an emergency vet fund. Reptile and aquarium setups cost more up front than many people expect.

Should I get a pet for my child?

Only if an adult is ready to be the real caregiver. Children can help, but hamsters and rabbits are fragile and often don't like being held, so supervise every interaction.
