How to calculate the grade you need on a final

You know your grade so far, the grade you want and how much the final counts. You will find the score the final must reach. With 85% now, a 90% goal and a 30% final, you need 101.7%, which means an A is out of reach but a B needs only 68.3%. Nothing leaves this tab.

  1. Find the three numbers

    Current grade: your average so far, as a percentage. Grade you want: the target for the course. Weight of the final: from the syllabus, such as 30%. The rest of the course is then 70%.

    Needed = (wanted − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. 85% now, 90% wanted, 30% final: 101.7%.

  3. Enter your numbers

    Type the current grade, the wanted grade and the weight. The needed score updates as you type: with 85, 90 and 30 it reads 101.7% on the final.

  4. Read a result over 100%

    Over 100% means the goal cannot be reached on the final alone without extra credit. Look at the letter table: a B (80%) needs 68.3%, a C needs 35%.

  5. Read a result at 0% or below

    With 95% now, 90% wanted and a 20% final, the needed score is 70%. If the result is 0% or less, you already have the grade and any score keeps it.

  6. Check the formula, then copy

    Needed = (wanted − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. For 90, 85 and 0.30: (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7. Copy puts the result and the table on the clipboard.

What is the formula?

Needed = (wanted − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight as a fraction such as 0.30.

What if I need more than 100%?

The target is out of reach on the final alone. Check the table for the highest letter you can still get.

What is my current grade?

Your weighted average on everything graded before the final, as your gradebook shows it.

Does the weight of the final matter a lot?

Yes. With 85% now and 90% wanted, a 30% final needs 101.7% but a 50% final needs only 95%.
