How to calculate the fuel cost of a trip

You are planning a drive and want the fuel bill before you leave. You will enter distance, your car's economy and the pump price, then read litres, cost, cost per person and cost per 100 km. 300 km at 7 L/100 km and 1.60 a litre costs 33.60. Nothing leaves this tab.

  1. Find the three numbers

    Distance from the map app. Economy from the car's trip computer or the spec sheet: L/100 km in most countries, km/L in some, mpg in the US. Price from the last fill-up, per litre or per gallon.

    Litres = distance ÷ 100 × L/100 km; cost = litres × price per litre.
    Litres = distance ÷ 100 × L/100 km; cost = litres × price per litre.

  3. Enter distance, economy and price

    Type the distance and pick km or mi. Type the economy and pick L/100 km, km/L or mpg. Type the price and pick per litre or per US gallon. The tool converts between them.

  4. Read the cost

    300 km at 7 L/100 km uses 21 litres; at 1.60 that is 33.60, or 11.20 per 100 km. In US units, 100 miles at 30 mpg and 3.50 a gallon is 11.67.

  5. Round trip and sharing

    Tick Round trip to double the distance: 67.20. Set People sharing to 3 and each pays 22.40, driver included.

  6. Add a margin, then copy

    Economy figures are for mixed driving; stop-and-go traffic, air conditioning and a full boot use about 10% more. Copy puts the result on the clipboard.

How do I convert mpg to L/100 km?

Divide 235.2 by the mpg: 30 mpg is 7.84 L/100 km. The tool does it when you pick mpg.

What does 300 km cost at 7 L/100 km?

21 litres. At 1.60 a litre that is 33.60; the round trip is 67.20.

Which currency is used?

None. The result is in whatever you type for the price.

Why is my real cost higher?

City traffic, air conditioning, roof racks and a loaded car raise consumption. Add about 10%.
