About this data
A maternal death is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of the end of a pregnancy, from causes related to it. Severe bleeding, infections and high blood pressure cause most of them, and most can be prevented with skilled care at birth.
These are modelled estimates from the UN Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group (MMEIG), which fills gaps where countries do not register every death.
