Black hair
Also called: jet black hair, raven hair, blue-black hair, 黒髪
In short
Black hair is the darkest natural hair colour and the most common one worldwide. In anime and manga it is often used for serious, traditional or grounded characters, and the long straight black-haired beauty is a classic ideal sometimes called yamato nadeshiko.

What black hair signals in character design
In a cast full of bright colours, black hair stands out by being calm. Convention links it with seriousness, reliability, tradition or quiet intelligence, and pairs it naturally with the hime cut, kimono and hanfu.
It also frames the face with the strongest contrast of any colour, which suits both cool, composed characters and dark, brooding ones. These are conventions, not rules; plenty of cheerful leads have black hair too.
Shades of black
| Shade | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Jet black | A flat, deep black with little visible tint |
| Blue-black | Black with cool blue highlights, a common anime choice that keeps the hair from looking flat |
| Soft black | A very dark brown that reads as black indoors and warms up in sunlight |
| Purple-black | Dark hair with violet highlights, often used for mysterious characters |
| Raven | A poetic name for glossy black with a cool sheen |
How to draw and colour black hair
Do not fill black hair with pure black. Use a very dark, slightly tinted base, a near-black shadow for depth, and a lighter band of highlight that follows the curve of the head. Without that highlight band the hair turns into a flat silhouette and its shape disappears.
Tint the highlight with the environment: cool blue for daylight or night scenes, warm brown for indoor lamps. Reflected light from skin or clothing along the lower edge also helps separate the hair from a dark background.
Keep line art inside the hair slightly lighter or coloured, so internal strand lines stay visible against the dark fill.
Black hair in photos, wigs and dye
Black hair absorbs light, so photographers often add a rim or hair light from behind to show its outline, especially against dark backgrounds. Underexposed black hair loses all detail in the shadows.
Black wigs can look heavy and flat in photos; a natural black or soft black with a slight sheen usually photographs better than pure jet black. Dark dye is easy to put on and very hard to lift later, so it is worth trying a wig first.
