Cat paw pose (nyan pose)

Also called: nyan pose, neko pose, paw hands, 猫の手

In short

The cat paw pose curls the fingers into loose fists, bends the wrists down and holds the hands near the face like a cat's front paws. Often called the nyan pose or neko pose, it is a playful gesture used with cat ears, cat-themed outfits or just a cheeky nyan.

Why paw hands read as cat

Cats tuck their toes under when they sit up or bat at things, and bent wrists with curled fingers copy that silhouette instantly. The pose borrows from the maneki-neko, the Japanese beckoning cat figure with one paw raised, and from the way cat characters in manga hold their hands.

It suits playful, mischievous or attention-seeking characters, and any costume with cat ears or a tail. Without a costume it still reads as cat-like, which makes it a quick way to show a character joking around.

How to draw paw hands

Bend the wrist forward about 60 to 90 degrees so the back of the hand faces the viewer. Curl all four fingers at the middle knuckles, leaving the tips just touching the palm, and tuck the thumb along the side of the index finger. The knuckles become a soft rounded edge: that edge is the paw.

Keep the hands loose. Tight fists look like a boxer, and fully straight fingers lose the cat shape. Elbows stay close to the body and the shoulders lift slightly, which also pulls the body into a compact, cat-like crouch.

Posing the nyan pose

Hold the paws just below the chin or beside the cheeks so they share the frame with the face. Tilt the head, open the mouth a little as if saying nyan, and try a slight lean toward the camera.

For a full-body shot, kneeling with paws on the floor or a crouch on a chair works well; shoot from a slightly lower camera so the pose does not look cramped. Matching cat ears or a tail completes the read.

FAQ

What is the nyan pose?

A cute pose where you curl your fingers into paw shapes and hold them near your face like a cat, often while saying nyan, the Japanese meow.

How do I make cat paw hands?

Bend your wrists forward, curl your fingers loosely toward the palm and keep the thumb tucked beside the index finger.

Is the cat paw pose related to the lucky cat?

Partly: the single raised paw echoes the maneki-neko, the Japanese beckoning cat figure.
