I love you hand sign (ILY)
Also called: ILY sign, ASL I love you, I love you in sign language, rock on vs I love you
In short
The I love you hand sign comes from American Sign Language: the thumb, index finger and little finger are raised while the middle and ring fingers fold down. It merges the ASL letters I, L and Y into one handshape. If the thumb is tucked in instead, the gesture becomes the rock on horns, which means something else.

Where the ILY sign comes from
In American Sign Language the little finger alone spells I, thumb and index make L, and thumb plus little finger make Y. Raise all three at once and you have I-L-Y, I love you. Deaf communities have used the handshape for a long time, and it later spread into everyday hearing culture as a friendly goodbye, a cheer and a photo pose.
In character art it reads as warm and sincere, a step more personal than a wave or a peace sign.
ILY sign vs rock on vs shaka
| Gesture | Fingers up | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| I love you (ASL) | Thumb, index, little finger | Love, affection, goodbye |
| Rock on horns | Index and little finger; thumb holds the folded fingers | Rock and metal music, enthusiasm |
| Shaka | Thumb and little finger only | Hang loose, relax |
| Y (ASL letter) | Thumb and little finger | The letter Y in fingerspelling |
The thumb is the whole difference between love and rock. In some Mediterranean and Latin American countries the horns can also be an insult, so the distinction matters.
How to draw the ILY hand
- Show the palm to the viewer; the ASL sign is normally made palm forward.
- The thumb sticks out to the side at roughly a right angle, clearly separate from the index finger.
- Middle and ring fingers fold to the palm together; draw their knuckles as a small bump, not two flat lines.
- The little finger is noticeably shorter than the index. Making them equal is the most common error.
- Keep the wrist straight; a bent wrist makes it look like a claw.
Using it in photos
Hold the hand at shoulder or cheek height, palm toward the lens, and check in the preview that the thumb is visible; from some angles it hides behind the index finger and the pose turns into horns.
A gentle smile suits the meaning better than a shout. For a two-person shot, both people making the sign toward each other reads clearly as affection.
FAQ
What is the difference between I love you and rock on hand signs?
I love you has the thumb out along with the index and little fingers. Rock on horns keep the thumb folded over the middle fingers.
Which hand do you use for I love you in sign language?
Either; signers use their dominant hand, palm facing the person they are signing to.
Is the ILY sign the same as the shaka?
No. The shaka raises only the thumb and little finger and means hang loose; the ILY sign adds the index finger.
