School uniform
Also called: blazer uniform, gakuran, 学生服, school outfit
In short
In anime and character design, a school uniform usually means the blazer style: a tailored jacket over a collared shirt, with a necktie or ribbon and a pleated skirt or trousers. The other main types are the sailor uniform and the gakuran, a dark, high-collared jacket traditionally worn by boys in Japan.

What a school uniform says about a character
Uniforms make a cast look like they belong to one place, so the small differences become personality. A neatly buttoned blazer and straight tie suggest a serious student, a loosened tie or open collar suggests a relaxed one, and a cardigan worn instead of the jacket feels softer.
The gakuran comes from European military-style student uniforms adopted in Japan in the late 19th century. The blazer type spread later and is now more common in real schools and in recent anime.

| Bottom | Pleated skirt, plaid skirt, straight trousers | Classic, colourful, neutral |
| Details | School crest on the pocket, contrast piping, year-colour ties | World-building |
How to draw a school uniform
- Build the blazer on the torso: shoulder seams sit at the edge of the shoulders, the lapels form a V down to the first button, and the hem falls just below the hips.
- Fabric is fairly stiff, so draw fewer, longer folds than on a shirt, mainly at the elbows and where the arm meets the body.
- The shirt collar sits inside the blazer collar; show a little of it at the neck and cuffs.
- For a gakuran, draw a straight standing collar with a row of buttons down the centre and minimal folds.
- Plaid skirts are easier if you draw the pleats first and then let the stripes bend with each pleat.
Wearing and photographing it
This advice is for adult cosplayers. A well-fitting blazer is the difference between a costume and a believable uniform, so have the sleeves end at the wrist bone and the shoulders sit flat. Iron the shirt collar and keep the tie knot neat unless the character wears it loose.
Everyday actions sell the outfit: carrying books against the chest, sitting sideways on a chair, leaning on a railing or walking with a bag over one shoulder. Eye-level shots with a 35mm or 50mm lens keep the scene natural, and soft afternoon light fits the slice-of-life mood.
FAQ
What is a gakuran?
A gakuran is a dark, usually black or navy, school jacket with a standing collar and a single row of buttons, traditionally worn by boys in Japan.
What is the difference between a school uniform and a sailor uniform?
A sailor uniform is one specific type with a square naval collar and neckerchief. School uniform is the wider term and usually means the blazer style in character design.
Why do anime school uniforms use different tie colours?
Many real Japanese schools colour-code ties or ribbons by school year, and anime often copies this so viewers can tell grades apart.
