M bangs (M-shaped bangs)

Also called: m bangs, m-shaped fringe, hair between eyes, M字バング

In short

M bangs are bangs divided into pointed clumps so the edge forms the shape of a capital M: longer pieces at the sides and a central strand dipping down between the eyes. They are one of the most common fringes in anime and manga art because they frame the face while keeping the eyes visible.

Why the M shape is everywhere in anime

Anime hair is drawn as clumps rather than individual strands, and the M fringe is the simplest arrangement of clumps that still looks natural. The long side pieces frame the cheeks, the gaps above each eye keep the expression clear, and the centre strand gives the face a focal point.

Because it is so common, the M fringe carries less personality than blunt bangs. It reads as friendly and approachable, which suits protagonists and ordinary-student characters well.

How to draw M bangs

  1. Mark the part or crown point; all bang clumps radiate from it over the forehead.
  2. Sketch the outer two clumps first, sweeping down past the temples.
  3. Add the central strand so it points between the eyes, then fill the gaps with one or two shorter clumps whose tips sit above each eye.
  4. Vary clump widths and lengths. Equal clumps make the M look like a crown or a comb.

Give each clump a slight S-curve and overlap them so some tips sit in front of others. In a turned head, clumps on the far side compress and the central strand shifts with the face, not with the frame of the picture.

Cutting M bangs on a wig

Start with bangs a little longer than you want. Pull out the central strand and the two outer pieces, cut the gaps between them shorter in shallow V shapes, and taper each point by snipping into it vertically. A little matte hairspray or wax holds clumps apart for photos.

Keep lighting from the front or slightly to the side so the points cast small, readable shadows instead of a dark band across the eyes.

FAQ

What is the strand between the eyes called?

It has no fixed name; in image tags it is usually described as hair between eyes.

Are M bangs the same as curtain bangs?

No. Curtain bangs part in the middle and sweep to both sides; M bangs keep a strand falling down the centre.

Why do my M bangs look like a crown?

The clumps are probably too even. Vary their widths, lengths and angles so the edge looks natural.
