Ahoge

Also called: idiot hair, antenna hair, cowlick, アホ毛

In short

An ahoge (アホ毛) is a single strand or small tuft of hair that sticks up from the top of a character's head. The word combines aho, meaning fool, and ke, meaning hair, so it is often translated as idiot hair. In anime and manga it usually signals a carefree, scatterbrained or cheerful character.

What an ahoge means

In real life the word describes stray, frizzy hairs that refuse to lie flat. In character design it became a deliberate accent: one curved strand that breaks the silhouette and adds a touch of comedy.

It is most common on airheaded, clumsy or energetic characters, and it doubles as a protagonist marker, helping a lead stand out in a crowd scene. It is also used on otherwise serious characters to hint at a softer side. Saber from the Fate series is a famous example: her dignified knight design keeps a small ahoge, and fans often treat it as a mood indicator.

Types of ahoge

  • Single curl: one strand arcing forward or back, the most common form.
  • Antenna: a tall, springy strand that stands nearly straight up.
  • Double ahoge: two strands, sometimes crossed or forming a V.
  • Heart or loop: a strand curled into a shape, used for comedic or cute effect.
  • Emotive ahoge: changes shape with mood, drooping when sad or spiking when startled.

How to draw an ahoge

Root the strand at the crown or on the part line, never on the forehead, and draw it as a narrow tapering clump that grows thinner toward the tip. A slight S or C curve looks lively; a straight line looks like a wire.

Keep it proportional to the rest of the hair clumps, and draw it with the same line weight and colour as the hair, plus a tiny highlight. Make sure it overlaps the background behind the head, since its job is to break the outline.

Animators treat the ahoge like a small spring. It lags behind sudden movements, bounces after a nod and can be exaggerated for reactions, so a few frames of follow-through sell the gag.

Ahoge for cosplay and photos

On a wig, isolate a thin section at the crown, twist it, and set the curve with strong hold hairspray or a hidden length of craft wire wrapped in matching fibre. Check it from the side, because an ahoge that looks right from the front can lie flat from other angles.

Shoot from eye level or slightly below so the strand stands out against the background rather than blending into the rest of the hair.

FAQ

What does ahoge mean in English?

It literally means idiot hair or foolish hair, from the Japanese aho (fool) and ke (hair).

Is an ahoge the same as a cowlick?

They are related. A cowlick is hair that grows in a stubborn direction; ahoge is the anime convention of one strand sticking up.

Does an ahoge always mean a character is silly?

No. It often hints at a playful side, but serious characters have them too, and many designers use it simply as a recognisable accent.
