Tennen (tennen boke): the natural airhead

Also called: tennen boke, airhead, 天然ボケ, spacey character

In short

Tennen, short for tennen boke, describes a person who is naturally spacey: they say or do odd things without trying to be funny and often do not notice why everyone is laughing. In anime the tennen character is gentle, guileless and slow to catch on, shown with blank wide eyes and a slight head tilt.

Meaning and origin

Tennen means natural, and boke comes from Japanese manzai comedy, where the boke is the one who says silly things and the tsukkomi is the partner who corrects them. A tennen boke is a boke who is not performing: the silliness is genuine.

The type is affectionate. Tennen characters are usually kind, honest and calm in a crisis because they do not register the danger. They often appear as the gentle older sister, the dreamy classmate or the cheerful shop assistant, and an ahoge, the single stray strand of hair, is a common visual hint.

Tennen is not dandere: a dandere is quiet because of shyness and opens up to people they trust, while a tennen character may chat freely but is simply on a different wavelength.

Flavours of tennen

  • Dreamy: drifts off mid-conversation, gazes at clouds, answers a question from three minutes ago.
  • Literal: takes figures of speech at face value.
  • Sweet and slow: smiles serenely, misses obvious hints, especially romantic ones.
  • Accidentally sharp: says something blunt or wise without realising it.
  • Tennen plus clumsy: overlaps with the dojikko type when the spaciness causes trips and spills.

How to draw a tennen look

The core is a relaxed, unfocused face. Draw the eyes round and large with the pupils slightly smaller or set a touch too far apart, so the gaze seems to look past the viewer. Leave the brows high and neutral and the mouth small: a tiny open o, a soft cat-like smile, or a dot.

Tilt the head 10 to 20 degrees and let a finger rest on the lips or chin. Floating question marks, little flowers or a few drifting sparkle shapes in the background make the mood read instantly. Avoid tension anywhere in the face or hands.

Posing a tennen character

Ask the model to look slightly above or beside the lens, not into it, and to let the mouth fall a little open. A head tilt toward the light softens the face.

Props help tell the story: a book upside down, a teacup held carelessly, a butterfly on the finger. Shoot at eye level with a gentle, even light; dramatic lighting fights the innocence of the look.
