Maid outfit
Also called: maid costume, maid dress, メイド服, maid uniform
In short
A maid outfit is a costume based on the working uniform of household servants: a dark, plain dress worn under a white apron, usually with a white collar, cuffs and a frilled headpiece. In anime and cosplay it ranges from long, sober Victorian-style dresses to shorter, frillier designs popularised by Japanese maid cafés.

Where the maid outfit comes from
The look comes from 19th- and early 20th-century domestic service in Britain and Europe, where maids wore a black or dark dress for afternoon duties and a white apron and cap to signal cleanliness. Those few pieces are still what make a costume read as a maid at a glance.
Japanese pop culture turned it into a character archetype, and maid cafés in Akihabara made the frilly version famous from the early 2000s. In stories, the maid often signals a devoted, capable or quietly competent character, sometimes played for comedy as a clumsy one.
Types of maid outfit
| Style | How it looks | Reads as |
|---|---|---|
| Victorian or classic maid | Ankle-length dark dress, long sleeves, long plain apron, simple cap | Serious, historical, elegant |
| Café maid | Knee-length dress, puff sleeves, ruffled apron, frilled headband, petticoat | Cute, friendly, idol-like |
| French maid costume | Short black dress, small lace apron | Party costume, comedic |
| Wa-maid (Japanese-style) | Kimono-like top with an apron and frilled headpiece | A mix of traditional and café |
| Gothic maid | All-black lace, crosses or dark ribbons | Mysterious, stylish |
How to draw a maid outfit
- Draw the dress first, then lay the apron over it. The apron bib follows the chest and the skirt part sits flat in front, so it does not puff out as much as the dress beneath.
- The apron ties at the back of the waist in a large bow with two long tails; in three-quarter or back views the bow is a strong detail.
- Keep the colour blocking simple: dark dress, white apron, white collar and cuffs. Too many accent colours weaken the read.
- The headpiece is a band of frills sitting on top of the head, in front of any buns or ponytails, not a hat.
- Ruffles on the apron edge are small repeated scallops; draw them smaller near the waist and wider at the hem.
Wearing and posing in a maid costume
For cosplayers, the apron length and the petticoat decide the silhouette more than anything else. A long apron reads classic; a short ruffled one with a full petticoat reads café. Press the apron flat so its white stays crisp in photos.
Classic poses work well: hands folded in front of the apron, a small bow from the waist, holding a tray at chest height, or a curtsy with the skirt lifted at the sides. Photographers can shoot from slightly below eye level for an elegant, upright feel, or at eye level for a warm, welcoming one. White fabric overexposes easily, so meter for the apron.
FAQ
What is the maid headpiece called?
In English it is a maid headdress or maid cap. In Japanese fandom the frilled headband is often called a katyusha, a borrowed word for an Alice band.
What colour is a traditional maid outfit?
Black or another dark colour for the dress, with a white apron, collar and cuffs. Café versions also come in pink, blue or other pastels.
What is the difference between a maid outfit and Lolita fashion?
A maid outfit is a uniform-style costume defined by its apron and headpiece. Lolita fashion is a street-fashion style worn as everyday clothing, with no apron and its own rules for silhouette and coordination.
