Puffy skirt

Also called: petticoat skirt, tutu skirt, bell skirt, パニエ

In short

A puffy skirt is any skirt that stands away from the body in a round, full shape instead of hanging straight. The volume usually comes from a petticoat, layers of tulle or net, gathering at the waist, or stiff fabric. It is a staple of Lolita fashion, maid café outfits, ballet tutus and idol costumes.

What makes a skirt puffy

Volume needs support. The skirt itself is often only lightly gathered; a petticoat underneath, made of layered tulle or organza, pushes it out into a bell or dome. Without that underlayer, even a very full skirt collapses into soft vertical folds.

Puffy skirts read as playful, sweet or theatrical, which is why designers use them for cheerful characters, princess looks and stage outfits.

How to draw a puffy skirt

  • Start with a simple solid: a dome, bell or short cone around the hips. Draw the waist as a small ellipse and the hem as a much larger one.
  • Add large, soft curves on the hem instead of sharp pleats. The lines of the skirt curve outward before turning down.
  • Show the underlayer: a peek of lace or tulle at the hem instead of a single clean edge sells the volume.
  • When the character sits, the skirt spreads into a flat circle around the hips; when she jumps, it lifts and flips at the edges.
  • Keep the legs visible below the hem so the skirt does not look like it is floating.

Wearing a puffy skirt

Cosplayers usually get the shape from a separate petticoat in a length just shorter than the skirt. Two petticoats layered give a stronger bell. Wear modest shorts or bloomers underneath, since full skirts move a lot.

For photos, curtsies, small twirls, holding the hem out with both hands and sitting with the skirt spread on the floor all show the volume. Shoot from slightly above for a cute, doll-like look, or at waist height to keep the silhouette accurate.

A petticoat, which is an underskirt of layered tulle or net that holds the shape, and usually bloomers or short shorts for coverage.
