How to convert MP3 to WAV

A DAW, an editor, or a form may want WAV, not MP3. You will decode a copy in this tab, pick 44.1 or 48 kHz if you need a target, and play the download.

6-minute read

Today's result A WAV that plays, at the sample rate you chose, with the original MP3 still on disk.

Open MP3 to WAV when the audio is on disk. The download is WAV even if you dropped M4A. Listen before you send. Nothing is uploaded.

  1. Know why you need WAV

WAV is uncompressed PCM. Editors and some upload forms want it. It will be much larger than the MP3. Do not convert just to 'improve quality' — you cannot get back what MP3 already threw away.

WAV is uncompressed. MP3 already threw data away. Converting does not restore it.

  3. Drop the MP3, M4A, or WAV

If nothing plays, this browser cannot decode that codec. Try WAV or another browser. Safari and Chrome usually handle MP3.

  4. Pick original, 44.1 kHz, or 48 kHz

Leave original if you are unsure. 44.1 is the CD / music default. 48 is the video default. Resampling does not add highs.

44.1 kHz for music. 48 kHz for video. Play the downloaded WAV.
44.1 kHz for music. 48 kHz for video. Play the downloaded WAV.
  5. Download WAV

Keep the MP3 until you have played the WAV.

  6. Play the downloaded file once

Do not send on the in-page player alone. If it is silent, the codec failed. If a form still wants MP3, send the original.

44.1 for music and CD-style work. 48 for video. Leave original if you are unsure.
